Amanda Wagner grew up in Salina and graduated with a B.A. from Kansas Wesleyan University. Prior to coming to TLI, she worked in Youth Services for the Salina Public Library and also for several small local farms. One of her favorite things about working here is that she thoroughly enjoys meeting our guests. She says, “We have such a great constituency and I love hearing about everyone’s backgrounds, as well as their unique ties with The Land.”
What TLI perennial crop do you look forward to eating most, and how would you prepare it?
I think it’s exciting what has already been accomplished with Kernza®. I enjoy that I can not only go to Blue Skye and have a Crank Case IPA, but to also have it taste good. I am most eager to cook with oils produced by a TLI crop.
What’s one aspect of your life history that most people don’t know or wouldn’t expect?
I lived in Los Angeles for a short time, and while there scored a part-time job as a member of a local food hub by delivering farm produce to stations throughout the city. My station was at NBC studios. I got a kick out of riding my bike through security past filming and extras waiting in line. It was also a fairly novel juxtaposition to be talking to major producers about their projects over their kale and beets.
What else are you passionate about (outside of work)?
Food, mixology, and the great outdoors.
If you were to write a book, what would it be about?
I’d transcribe the local history of Bennington, Kansas, where I currently live, as told from the perspective of my in-laws, who are steeped in rich stories spanning generations.
