Raised in Okemos, Michigan, Seth Murray received his Bachelor of Science in Crop and Soil Sciences at Michigan State University, co-founded the student organic farm, and earned a PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics at Cornell University, focused on sorghum genetics. A high school English teacher gave Seth Becoming Native to This Place by The Land Institute co-founder Wes Jackson, thus setting him on a course to become a plant breeder to improve the sustainability of agriculture. Seth is excited to bring his passion for service leadership with multiple scientific societies to The Land Institute board, where his agricultural research journey first began.
My most perennial trait is problem solving–Learning comes best from understanding how agriculture, plant genetics, computer code, academia, or even my tractor works, and fixing what is broken.
