Born, raised, and schooled in an urban setting in his native Ethiopia, Yilma Kebebe had an unexpected assignment to an agricultural college, giving him a whole new start in the world of agriculture. Yilma was first introduced to The Land Institute several years ago at a Gates Foundation convening of scientists working on perennial crops. His recent encounter was in 2025 at a perennial grain conference co-hosted by CIMMYT and The Land Institute in Mexico, where he became better informed on the role of perennial crops in sustainable agriculture. Yilma’s extensive background in agricultural research and development in the developing world provides him with an opportunity to link the work of The Land Institute to where it could be relevant.
My most perennial trait is Coaching & Mentoring—Sharing my relevant experience with early-career researchers.
