Michelle is a former board member and 1991 intern of The Land Institute and a professor of ecosystem ecology in the Center for Ecosystem Science and Society at Northern Arizona University. Michelle received a concurrent BS/BA in Biology and Literature from Evergreen State College and a Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California-Berkeley. In 1991, she was an intern at The Land Institute, which motivated her to pursue graduate studies in ecosystem ecology. She has published more than 100 papers in scientific journals, including Nature and Science, on topics that range from fine-scale studies of plant-soil interactions to large-scale studies of biosphere feedbacks to global climate change. She currently serves as an associate editor of the journals Ecosystems and Ecological Applications and as a board member of the Ecological Society of America.
