Raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, Julia Olmstead pursued education in plant sciences and journalism, eventually earning two master’s degrees: one in plant breeding from Iowa State University and the other in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley. As an undergrad studying botany, Julia was deeply inspired by Wes Jackson’s writing — so much so that she pursued graduate studies in plant breeding. She was a natural science research fellow at The Land Institute. Her plant science education eventually led her to environmental advocacy and philanthropy. Julia served on The Land Institute board for seven years, including as board chair, bringing to bear her experience in philanthropy and passion for equity.
My most enduring trait is Motherhood—my three kids are my biggest sources of inspiration and pride.
