Renan Souza

Raised in the countryside of Minas Gerais, Brazil, Renan Souza obtained a degree in Agricultural Engineering, then earned a MSc in Plant Breeding and a PhD in Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Genomics from the University of Georgia in the US. After studying and working for many years with soybean breeding, he learned about the perennial oilseed program led by Dr. David Van Tassel at The Land Institute. Shortly after, he began a postdoctoral fellowship in a collaboration between The Land Institute and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology to develop the Silphium reference genome. At The Land Institute, Renan is focused on applying genomic technologies and bioinformatics to accelerate crop domestication.

My most perennial trait is Curiosity – whenever I get interested in a trait, I want to find the genes that control it.
