Q&A

What’s most inspiring about your specific position at The Land Institute?

I am happy to work directly with producers and researchers to explore alternative forages under limited irrigation throughout Western Colorado. I enjoy traveling and seeing different operations, connecting with shareholders, and being part of continuing research in agriculture.

What drew you to work at The Land Institute?

I have always been passionate about nature and plants. During my undergraduate in environmental sciences, we learned extensively about the wide array of issues humans are facing as a result of our interaction with the environment. During my master’s degree, I explored my passion for plants and specifically found an interest in crops. Working at TLI combines my two greatest passions into a career where I can work with others who are trying to improve the world as well.

What perennial grain do you look forward to eating most, and how would you prepare it?

Kernza is exciting due to the wide array of foods that are rooted in wheat. I would likely try to make Kernza into a pizza dough. From there, I would pick fresh basil from my garden and combine that with an Italian cheese, olive oil. pine nuts, and garlic to create a fresh pesto. I would top the pizza with pesto, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and maybe some chicken and bake at 425 for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

What else are you passionate about outside of work?

I am passionate about the outdoors and enjoy skiing, mountain biking, disc golfing, river rafting, rock climbing, and anything else that involves being outside and in nature.

What were you like at age 10?

I grew up assisting my father with landscaping and going outdoors. This fostered a passion for plants and nature from a young age.
